Toronto Boating Tips & Rules

Lake Ontario Wind Warning: Lake Ontario generates significant wave action quickly on west and southwest winds. Check Environment Canada Marine Forecasts (weather.gc.ca) for Lake Ontario Central before launching. A 15-knot wind can produce 1-metre waves within a few hours on the open lake.

Speed Zones

Maximum 10 km/h within 30 metres of shore, docks, or swimmers across all Ontario waterways. Toronto Harbour has additional posted speed limits. Toronto Harbour Police actively enforce these.

Alcohol Rules

Operating a vessel while impaired (including marijuana) is a federal Criminal Code offence. BAC limit is 0.08% — same as driving. Toronto Harbour Police and OPP Marine Unit conduct sobriety checks on Lake Ontario throughout the season.

No-Wake Zones

Toronto Harbour and the Don River mouth are strictly enforced no-wake zones. The inner bay of Frenchman's Bay (Pickering) is also no-wake. Watch for posted buoys and signs at each marina entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions — Toronto Boat Launches

Are there free boat launches in Toronto?
Most Toronto and Mississauga waterfront launches charge fees. Ajax Rotary Park and Pickering Frenchman's Bay in Durham Region are free or low-cost. Expect to pay $20–$30 at Toronto-managed facilities like Ashbridge's Bay and Bluffer's Park Marina.
What registration markings are required to launch in Toronto?
Your Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) number must appear on both sides of the bow in block letters, minimum 75 mm (3 inches) tall, in a colour contrasting to the hull — Transport Canada SOR/2010-91. Toronto Harbour Police enforce this on Lake Ontario. Get compliant vinyl decals at compliancelettering.ca.
Can I launch a Sea-Doo or Jet Ski in Toronto?
Personal watercraft (PWC) can launch from the same public ramps as other boats. Most GTA launches allow PWC. Toronto Harbour has speed zones that restrict PWC operation near shore. Riders must be at least 16 years old and carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). PWC must also carry PCL numbers on both sides of the hull forward section.
Where can I fish from a boat in Toronto?
Lake Ontario off Toronto is productive for chinook salmon, rainbow trout (steelhead), walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass. Popular areas include the Leslie St Spit edge, the Scarborough Bluffs nearshore, and the Pickering nearshore for walleye. An Ontario fishing licence is required (available at SportChek, Canadian Tire, or online at ontario.ca/fishinglicence).
